When I was in Germany 4/35 Armor, Illesheim (Nov ’71 – Jul ’74) the M47 hulls & turrets were filled with sand and used as targets for the M60 series of MBTs. The sand kept them from disintegrating when hit with the 105mm HEAT rounds, although mostly HEAT TP-T rounds were used (blue colored practice rounds) filled with concrete to simulate the weight/ballistics of a live HEAT round. a sad end to a classic tank of the early old War period.
