    I agree 100% with your comments on tank engines being a critical and often overlooked technology, with the proviso that transmissions should also be included. This is because the transmission also does the steering along with propulsion and has no commercial counterpart. As with engines, the lighter tanks at the start of the war could make do with very crude and inefficient clutch-brake steering from bulldozers, but by the end of the war this approach was no longer viable.
