Book Alert: New “Panzer Tracts” coming soon

panzer tractsAccording to Armorama.com, two new entries in the Panzer Tracts series are slated for release within a month. Author Hilary Doyle says that the two new books will look at the Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. H and Ausf. J, and the late developments of the Sd.Kfz. 251 and its planned successor, the Kätzchen. The volume on the Pz IV will include the detailed research, photos and drawings that characterize the series as well as detailed information on different types of Schürzen as well as covering the Befhelspanzer IV Ausf J and Beobachtungspanzer IV variants. The second book examines the Kätzchen, a fully tracked vehicle intended to replace the Sd.Kfz.251 but coming too late. Some late variants of the Schützenpanzer Sd.Kfz.251 like the /17 with Schwebelafette or the /20 “Uhu” are covered as well.

Book Alert: The Tanks of Tammuz

It appears that a Kindle edition of the classic 1968 book The Tanks of Tammuz has been made available for purchase through Amazon. This book by Shabtai Teveth offers an eyewitness view of Israeli tank actions during the Six Day War of 1967.  There is no publishers description available, we have posted the Kirkus Review description below.  Click on the image to go to the Amazon page for this book.

Kirkus Review:

A scrapbook of the Israeli Army’s Armored Corps, retrospectively including a twenty-year history of its accomplishments and a close account of its role in the June War. (Tammuz is June.) There are novelistic vignettes of commanders and soldiers–especially Israel Tal, who has headed the Corps since 1964. The Army first realized the tanks’ potential in the 1956 Sinai campaign. During the June War they fought the crucial vanguard ground battle, breaking into Sinai again without direct air cover, then pushed the Egyptian Army back toward the Canal and cracked the Syrian frontier. Teveth, a prominent journalist, rode with the tanks; one can see how an inch-by-inch eyewitness report would become a best-seller in Israel, but fewer American readers will want this degree of military detail. Teveth begins the book with the May 1967 mobilization in Israel, pressing the prevalent view that war was imperative. He uses General Tal, among others, as a vehicle for his further messages: Jewish nationalism may be philosophically questionable, but Israel must survive in a world of nation-states; Israeli militarism may be regrettable, but Jews must survive in a region of powerful enemies. . . and at least the army is as democratic as discipline will permit. The book comes with Dayan’s recommendation.

Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front: An Interview with Robert Forczyk

Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller, the follow-up to the 2014 book Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1941-1942: Schwerpunkt, hit the bookstores this past week.  We had the opportunity to do a Q&A with author Robert Forczyk, both about his experiences as a US Armor officer and his research on the WWII Eastern front.  Mr Forczyk is a prolific author, having penned 26 historical volumes for publishers such as Osprey and Pen & Sword.  His primary interests are Eastern Front WW2, Napoleonic era, the American Revolution and Roman warfare.  He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, University of Virginia and University of Maryland.  He retired after a 20 year career as an armor and military intelligence officer in the US Army, having served in the 2nd ID, 4th ID and 29th ID(L) and currently works as a consultant in the Washington D.C. area.  He is also a highly rated vine voice reviewer of military history books on Amazon.

—————————————————-

How did you end up as an Armor officer? Can you give us a brief description of your career?

I was commissioned from ROTC in 1983. Armor was my second choice, after Military Intelligence. However, in the early 1980s the US Army wanted more armor officers, not MI. When I got to Fort Knox, I took the Cavalry Officer’s Basic Course.

You mention in the intro of “Schwerpunkt” that you commanded an M60 in Korea in 1986. Did you spend your entire career as a tanker in the M60?

I was trained on both M-60A3 TTS and M-1, but spent my whole time as a tanker in battalions equipped with the M60A3 TTS. At Fort Knox, we got to compare both tanks on a daily basis and I came away with the impression that the M1 is better suited to offensive warfare (speed, firepower, protection), but the M60A3 is probably a better defensive tank (better fuel economy with its diesel engine).

Germany’s Panzer Arm in WWII: An Interview with R. L. DiNardo

Last year we had the opportunity to conduct a phone interview with Prof. Richard DiNardo.  Dr. DiNardo is author of numerous books on military history, although it was his book Germany’s Panzer Arm in World War II (Stackpole Military History Series)
that brought him to our attention.  This book started out as his doctoral dissertation and  was later expanded on for publication.  The premise of the book is to examine the various different factors  and components that made up the German Panzer force.  These include the organizational, economic, personnel, doctrinal and tactical factors that affected the Panzer arm’s performance.  The book manages to accomplish all this in a very readable 199 pages.

Since the end of WWII, its fair to say that barrels of ink have been put to page concerning the German Panzer forces of 1933 to 1945.  Most books have focused on vehicles and/or battles.  This book does neither.  What it does is explain the underlying factors that made the Panzer forces what they were.  As such, we think it should be required reading for anyone looking for an understanding of German Panzer forces beyond just memorizing tank model numbers or Panzer division names.

While we certainly recommend Germany’s Panzer Arm in WW2, we would also recommend to those interested in WW2 history his book Mechanized Juggernaut or Military Anachronism?: Horses and the German Army of World War II (Stackpole Military History Series).  This book looks at the subject of horses and the German army of WWII.  While the focus in many military histories is on the mechanized component of the Wehrmacht, little attention has been paid , or analysis given, of the hundreds of thousands of horses that provided the motive power to the vast majority of the German Army.

Both books are available in softcover as part of the Stackpole Military History Series.

While we recorded this interview in spring of 2015, we have not had the opportunity to publish it until now due to technical reasons.  That is, we lost the files due to a computer mishap.  Fortunately, we recently were able to recover the files and finish transcribing (most of) the audio.  The interview is posted below, our questions in italics and Dr. DiNardo’s answers in regular font.

How did you get interested in the topic of World War II German panzers?

It’s the old saying by Thomas Hardy, peace makes for dull history.  War makes for rattling good reading.  Like a lot of kids I was drawn to the German military because I thought the uniforms were cool.  It’s that simple.

Book Alert: Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller

In two weeks Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller  by Robert Forczyk will be released according to Amazon.  This is the follow-up to his book Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1941-1942: Schwerpunkt which came out in 2014.  Published by Pen and Sword, this new book is hardcover with 288 pages.  Robert Forczyk is a former US Army tanker and author of several books on WW2, a number of Osprey softcover books and also a prolific Amazon reviewer.  For those that don’t mind reading on electronic devices, it’s worth pointing out that the first book of this set is available for Kindle for a mere $1.99.

Publishers Description:

By 1943, after the catastrophic German defeat at Stalingrad, the Wehmacht’s panzer armies gradually lost the initiative on the Eastern Front. The tide of the war had turned. Their combined arms technique, which had swept Soviet forces before it during 1941 and 1942, had lost its edge. Thereafter the war on the Eastern Front was dominated by tank-led offensives and, as Robert Forczyk shows, the Red Army’s mechanized forces gained the upper hand, delivering a sequence of powerful blows that shattered one German defensive line after another.

His incisive study offers fresh insight into how the two most powerful mechanized armies of the Second World War developed their tank tactics and weaponry during this period of growing Soviet dominance. He uses German, Russian and English sources to provide the first comprehensive overview and analysis of armored warfare from the German and Soviet perspectives.

This major study of the greatest tank war in history is compelling reading.

Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller is available for pre-order at Amazon.

Book Alert: Illustrated History of the Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 202

April 30 marks the release of a new book on the history of Sturmgeschutz-Abteilung 202 by Norbert Szamveber.  This book, Illustrated History of the Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 202, is a rather hefty 396 pages along with 108 photos, 40 maps and documents and 9 color plates.   For those with an interest in WW2 German armor, this book should prove very interesting.

Publishers Description:

The Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 202 was one of the most successful German assault gun units in the Second World War. It had been deployed exclusively on the Eastern Front against the Red Army between 1941 and 1945. The StuGs of this unit were very effective AFVs on the battlefield in the role of heavy weapons for infantry fire support and also as mobile antitank firepower. Dr. Norbert Számvéber, author of Waffen-SS Armour in Normandy and Days of Battle, presents a detailed combat history of this unit, primarily based on archival sources. The book includes a significant number of rare photographs and several maps.
