Sherman Tank arrives in Saratoga for display at NYS Military Museum

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -A World War II-era Sherman tank that spent the past 22 months for refurbishment and repainting with New York Army National Guard maintenance personnel returns for public display at the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs. The famed WWII armored vehicle spent just under ten years stored at the museum awaiting a proper display location and new paint job. The restoration project included welding broken parts as well as stripping and painting the tank. These tasks were a unique training exercise for the Allied Trade section of the New York Army National Guard machinists and mechanics from the State Maneuver Area Training Equipment Site, or MATES, based at Fort Drum, New York. The restoration provides a unique maintenance training task as Soldiers refurbished the Sherman and other historic vehicles for display at other military locations in New York.

Camp Blanding is located about an hour north of Gainesville, FL and is the primary military reservation and training base for the Florida National Guard, both the Florida Army National Guard and certain non-flying activities of the Florida Air National Guard. The based also served as a training center and POW camp during the Second World War.

To celebrate its history, located on site is the Camp Blanding Museum and Memorial Park. Open to the public, the facility contains a history museum in one of Camp Blanding’s restored World War II buildings, tracing the history of both Camp Blanding and the Florida National Guard. Outdoor exhibits and displays include equipment and Army, Navy and Air Force aircraft from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and Operation Desert Storm, including captured Soviet-manufactured Iraqi equipment from the latter conflict.
