Book Alert: Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller

In two weeks Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller  by Robert Forczyk will be released according to Amazon.  This is the follow-up to his book Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1941-1942: Schwerpunkt which came out in 2014.  Published by Pen and Sword, this new book is hardcover with 288 pages.  Robert Forczyk is a former US Army tanker and author of several books on WW2, a number of Osprey softcover books and also a prolific Amazon reviewer.  For those that don’t mind reading on electronic devices, it’s worth pointing out that the first book of this set is available for Kindle for a mere $1.99.

Publishers Description:

By 1943, after the catastrophic German defeat at Stalingrad, the Wehmacht’s panzer armies gradually lost the initiative on the Eastern Front. The tide of the war had turned. Their combined arms technique, which had swept Soviet forces before it during 1941 and 1942, had lost its edge. Thereafter the war on the Eastern Front was dominated by tank-led offensives and, as Robert Forczyk shows, the Red Army’s mechanized forces gained the upper hand, delivering a sequence of powerful blows that shattered one German defensive line after another.

His incisive study offers fresh insight into how the two most powerful mechanized armies of the Second World War developed their tank tactics and weaponry during this period of growing Soviet dominance. He uses German, Russian and English sources to provide the first comprehensive overview and analysis of armored warfare from the German and Soviet perspectives.

This major study of the greatest tank war in history is compelling reading.

Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller is available for pre-order at Amazon.

Book Alert: The First Tank Crews by Stephen Pope

Amazon is listing an April 30 release date for this new book examining the story of first tank crews at the Somme battlefield in 1916.  Written by Stephen Pope, The First Tank Crews: The lives of the Tankmen who fought at the Battle of Flers Courcelette 15 September 1916 is a rather substantial 400 pages and is published by Helion and Company.

Publishers Description:

This remarkable new book reveals the hitherto unknown story of the soldiers who took the first tanks into action on the Somme battlefield in September 1916. Drawing on official records, contemporary newspaper reports and family memories, Stephen Pope provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the First Tank Crewmen, covering their recruitment, scant training, rapid deployment and their premature use in battle. He then traces their inter-connected lives over the next two years as tanks played a key role in the defeat of the Germany Army in 1918. He reveals the story of their return to civilian life and their often difficult struggle to build a family life. Sadly many of the First Tank Crews died young, some due to injuries or illnesses developed as a result of their wartime service.

Amongst the stories revealed are those of the grandson of the social reformer Joseph Rowntree, the champion rose grower Bill Harkness, the Scottish chemist Stuart Hastie who introduced science into the whisky distilling process and the Liverpool school teacher Graham Nixon who tried to teach John Lennon mathematics. None of those who fought in the tanks achieved great fame for their actions and few revealed their wartime secrets to their families. However, many became pillars of their local communities, giving a life of service to those around them.

This book tells the previously untold stories of bravery, determination and dedication by a group of unsung heroes. The author has used his contacts with more than fifty relatives of those who fought at the First Tank Action and used their input to provide a detailed description of their lives after the war. He has also gathered together many previously unpublished pictures including many of the tankmen in France, and has revealed the backstory to several well known photographs. Above all, he has linked individual lives together to create a fascinating story of ordinary men who took part in extraordinary events. The story of the First Tank Crews is one well worth reading.

Book Alert: Valentine Infantry Tank

valentine bookA new addition to the Osprey Publishing New Vanguard line titled Valentine Infantry Tank 1938-1945 is slated to be released on April 21.  Authored by Bruce Newsome, this is a soft cover book of 48 pages  with color illustrations.

Publishers description:

The Valentine was the most produced and most widely used British tank of the Second World War. The Valentine first saw combat during Operation Compass in November 1941 and remained one of the main medium tanks in British service into 1943. As the Churchill became more prevalent the Valentine was relegated to specialist and tank-destroyer variants, which would remain in service in the Far East to the end of the war.
This book describes the evolution of the Valentine design and weighs up its impact on the battlefield. Although widely regarded today as one of the weaker tanks to be fielded during the war, it was exceptionally numerous, with more Valentines produced than any other British tank.

51wXcYrcOvL._SX391_BO1,204,203,200_The new book “AFV Photo Album Vol. 2: Armored Fighting Vehicles on Czechoslovakian Territory 1945” is available.  This hardcover book comes in at 176 pages and is authored by  Marek Solar, Petr Dolezal and Vladimir Kos.  The book is published by Canfora Grafisk.  Copies are available through third party vendors on Amazon or through the website for Canfora Grafisk.

Publishers Description:

In the second volume in our series we continue the journey through the Czech lands, where a tremendous number of vehicles were knocked out, blown-up or simply left behind by retreating German forces during the final momentous weeks of World War 2. Among them were also vast amounts of Red Army machines, knocked out in the many tank battles that raged along the retreat route.

Few historians and modellers know the full facts about the units and their hardware, which were involved in some of the last battles of the war. Now we revisit many of the places covered in Volume 1, revealing new facts and in many cases unpublished photos to illustrate the journey, accompanied by highly detailed captions.

The book will take a closer look at what happened to the vehicles after the war, when they were collected systematically and transported to the melting plants. King Tigers, Panthers, Pz.IVs, StuGs. Hetzers, SPWs, T-34s and IS-2s were among them, as well as more rarely seen vehicles such as Möbelwagens, Marders and L/70As. We will also glance at a few of the surviving vehicles that went on to serve in the post- war period.

This work is aimed at the modeller and historian alike and although mainly a photographic examination, detailed accounts of the units’ strength, and details about vehicle production variants are also included. Modellers will also benefit from the highly realistic colour profiles, printed in large format.
