Book Review: The Tanks of Operation Barbarossa

Here is our video book review of the new title The Tanks of Operation Barbarossa: Soviet versus German Armour on the Eastern Front by Boris Kavalerchik.  This is hardcover book from Pen & Sword.

Publishers Description:

When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 the Red Army had four times as many tanks as the Wehrmacht and their tanks were seemingly superior, yet the Wehrmacht won the border battles with extraordinary ease the Red Armys tank force was pushed aside and for the most part annihilated. How was this victory achieved, and were the Soviet tanks really as well designed as is often believed? These are the basic questions Boris Kavalerchik answers in this absorbing study of the tanks and the tank tactics of the two armies that confronted each other at the start of the war on the Eastern Front.

Drawing on technical and operational documents from Russian archives, many of which were classified until recently and are unknown to Western readers, he compares the strengths and weakness of the tanks and the different ways in which they were used by the opposing armies. His work will be essential reading for military historians who are interested in the development of armoured warfare and in this aspect of the struggle on the Eastern Front.

Video Book Review: Tank Craft Series

We recently recieved copies of four different titles in the Tank Craft series.  Rather than review these all in one long video, we recorded an introduction video with some commentary about the series overall, followed by seperate videos for each book.  The titles covered in these are:

T-34: Russia’s Armoured Spearhead (Tank Craft)

Panzer IV: 1939-1945 (Tank Craft)

Panzer I & II: Blueprint for Blitzkrieg 1933–1941 (Tank Craft)

Jagdpanther Tank Destroyer: German Army and Waffen-SS, Western Europe 1944–1945 (Tank Craft)

T-34/85 Tanks in Yemen

This short video showed up recently on youtube.  According to the video description, this is a compilation of all the available footage of T-34/85 tanks in use in the fighting in Yemen.  It is a fairly short video and the resolution is not fantastic, but it’s still pretty amazing that these 60+ year old tanks are still being used in combat.

eBook Alert: T-34 and SU-152

World of Tanks has announced that the Russian language books on the T-34 and SU-152 put out by Tactical Press books a couple years ago are now available in English language ebook versions.  Hardcover versions of these books are planned, although not available yet.  For those wishing to purchase the ebook version, click here.

Publisher’s description:

2-booksThe World of Tanks series books are now available for the first time in English! They include never-before-seen photos, diagrams, and documents from Soviet archives—which is why we distinguish each volume as “The Russian View.”

In “The SU-152 and Related Vehicles,” you will learn about the design and evolution of the legendary self-propelled gun on the KV chassis, including many little-known prototypes and proposed alternate models. “The T-34 Goes to War” chronicles the real story of the celebrated medium tank, from its troubled conception to its first, desperate combat actions in the cauldron of Barbarossa. Both books are richly illustrated with photos, blueprints, and cutaway diagrams.

Comments on the series from Nicholas “The Chieftain” Moran:

Those of you around for a while will recall the release of the Tactical Press books in Russian a couple of years ago. Sadly, my enjoyment and the utility of my autographed copies has been limited somewhat by the minor detail that I don’t read any Russian, hence the idea that these books be translated into English, and I wholeheartedly approve.

The entire series covers vehicles that have already been addressed in English. However, these are based on the research of Russian authors who were able to take advantage of the more open Russian archives. Until now, we have been limited pretty much to the work of folks like Zaloga or Warford — well-regarded authors, but ultimately Americans at a distance from the source. I’ll guarantee that the information published hasn’t been available in English before now.

Book News: WoT Books on SU-152 and T-34 delayed again

According to Amazon, the books on the T-34 and the SU-152 being put out by World of Tanks have been delayed until summer of 2017.  Originally slated for a summer 2016 release, these books were then pushed back to November of 2016.  Now it appears the wait will be even longer.  These books are hardcover volumes authored by Russian researchers.  The SU-152 book is written by Yuri Pasholok and the T-34 book by A. Ulanov.  Hopefully this delay is the last one these books will suffer, we have been looking forward to these.

Photo of the Day: Aberdeen Proving Grounds 1950

We had found this photo as part of an article in a 1950 LIFE magazine about tank testing at the US Army Proving Grounds at Aberdeen Maryland.  The photo shows an M4A3E8 “Easy Eight” Sherman, a M26 Pershing, a M46 Patton, and most interestingly, a fairly early model Soviet T-34.

US tries to catch up

Over at Tank-net.com, a member by the name of “Whelm” posted a higher resolution of the photo which we have posted below along with a second picture of these vehicles.

Here is some footage from an event put on by the Parola Tank Museum in Finland.  This clip features a T-34 in Finnish markings and a BMP-1.

From the Vault: British Report on Soviet V-2 Diesel Engine

Today we present one more English 1944 report on Soviet equipment posted on Scribd.  This report examines the V-2 12 cylinder diesel tank engine used in both the T-34 and the KV-1.  This is a very thorough report, being almost as long as the similar reports on the vehicles themselves (posted here and here.) Detailed information on the V-2 engine is not all that easy to find in English, so this report should prove quite useful to those with a particular interest in the V-2 diesel.  Click on the image below to view the report at Scribd.

From the Vault: 1944 British Report on T-34 and KV-1

At Scribd there are posted two British 1944 reports examining a Soviet T-34 and a KV-1 tank.  There are several interesting aspects to these reports.  The British report writers seem relatively impressed with the Russian vehicles, stating that:

The design shows a clear-headed appreciation of the essential of the an effective tank and the requirements of war, duly adjusted to the particular characteristics of the Russian soldier, the terrain and the manufacturing facilities available.  When it is considered how recently Russia has become industrialized and how great a proportion of the industrialized regions have been over-run by the enemy, with consequent loss of hurried evacuation of plant and workers, the design and production of such useful tanks in such great numbers stands out as an engineering achievement of the first magnitude.

For those that like to obsess over armor, the reports include fairly detailed diagrams noting the thickness of armor for each vehicle, including Brinell hardness figures.  Click on cover image to go to the Scribd page.
